Dr Anya Johnson: Work Redesign in a Hospital



The theme of this year's AOM Conference was 'making organisations meaningful'; a theme highly relevant to the Transformative Work Design Centre.

In a special symposium on medical research, Dr Anya Johnson from the University of Sydney presented research (co-authored with several others, including Sharon) on work redesign within an an Australian hospital. Anya showed how the introduction of an advanced practice nurse role provided support to junior doctors working on overtime shifts. The work redesign meant that junior doctors were able to spend more time on particular tasks, and were more likely to self-initiate ward rounds. This study builds on an earlier published study by these authors showing further benefits of the work redesign (see below).
